We started out in 2004 with 17 members of the Fort Lauderdale HOG Chapter forming the drill team.

For those unfamiliar with drilling, it is the fine art of precision riding. The team is moving as one unit with synchronized movement in close proximity with tight maneuvers. We perform at various rallies and community events and compete among other teams for bragging rights. The Fort Lauderdale Harley Davidson Drill Team now has 9 members with 6-8 performing at any given event. The team members are all Fort Lauderdale HOG Chapter members. The team is also sponsored by the Alligator Alley Harley-Davidson dealership.

We all have been riding for years but drilling only a few years since joining the team. The team practices for a few hours a week working on skills and the performance routines. All drill team members must qualify by riding a series of exercises taken from the police motorman training curriculum before allowed toride in the performance line up. Incidentally, only one team member is a police officer. The FLHD team members are responsible for their own motorcycle, their attendance and any mishaps. And yes, every member has at one time or another damaged their Ultra Classic motorcycle, gotten injured or embarrassed themselves by falling at the most in opportune time. It’s all part of drilling.

Our show performance routine consists of over 40 individual maneuvers – some slow, some with bursts of speeds close to 40mph, some linear, some circular and all within inches of each rider. Team members have mastered each of the individual maneuvers and then practiced them in sequence until it is second nature. The team captain coordinates all the maneuvers by a series of commands either verbal, auditory, visual or strictly by timing. The average show is 15 to 20 minutes and we have performed as many as 4 shows in a day. The Drill Team has performed at National H.O.G. rallies at Milwaukee 25th anniversary, Oklahoma City, Knoxville, New York city, Harley Davidson 105th anniversary, along with State rallies in FL, GA, AL, TN.
